Problem
Despite seamless digital tools, employees often disengage in meetings — using devices as convenient scapegoats. This disrupts collaboration and raises a quiet moral dilemma.
Mission
Understand why people use devices as excuses in meetings, and give companies useful guidance to make meetings more effective.
Methodology
- Literature review to map prior work and gaps
- 7 in-depth interviews with full-time employees
- Thematic & content analysis (reactions, feelings, activities, excuses, meeting culture, formality)
- Strong ethical safeguards: confidentiality & informed consent
Findings (partial — paper not yet published)
- Reluctance to actively engage in meetings
- A moral dilemma between being a "diligent employee" and using the time differently
- People shift to personal work when content feels irrelevant
- A preference for work-related excuses (easier to justify)
- Laptops are the most "acceptable" device for multitasking
Takeaway — a healthier meeting culture
- Clear agendas and objectives
- Encourage active participation
- Question whether each meeting is necessary
- Keep meetings focused and time-boxed
- Provide training and resources
